I find hand signals can change everything. But when at a dog park or in public it’s not always as easy for your dog to hear your commands clearly. It is easy to train in your home, no distractions. I can repeat a command without hand signals a few times but if I do a hand signal without a verbal command he always obeys. My current puppy is much better with signals than words. Seems small and some may say “my dog does fine with verbal commands” but it’s smart for a few reasons.įirst, some dogs learn better by signals, if yours is one of those it will be better behaved and trained if you’re training in a method he/she can learn best from. I always say the word and do the signal together. I’m a firm believer in hand signals for dogs while your training with words.
